Sri Lanka is very cheap, warm, and English is widely used — you can live comfortably as a family on a fraction of a UK budget while running businesses remotely.
For a 14-year-old needing a proper IGCSE place and rowing, Colombo is the pragmatic base (with weekend trips south to surf); the south coast (Galle, Weligama) has the lifestyle and cheapest living but no established British day school, so it means online schooling.
The honest counterweights are distance from the UK, monsoon seasonality, and a still-recovering economy — and the nomad visa is brand-new, so the rules are still shifting.

Then a Colombo IGCSE day place (mid-tier ~£4,500/yr) and ~6 return UK flights (usually 1-stop, ~£550 each) take the all-in to ~£2,215/mo. A Galle base swaps school fees for an online provider.
Tax-resident at 183+ days on worldwide income, but foreign income earned in foreign currency and remitted through a licensed bank is a flat 15% final tax; kept offshore, progressive to 36%. UK treaty gives relief — take local advice.
Public care basic; expats use private hospitals (Colombo: Nawaloka, Asiri; Galle has a decent private hospital). Consults ~£10–25. Carry international insurance with medevac (~£1,200–2,400/yr family).
Hot, humid (26–32°C). The southwest monsoon (May–Sep) hits the south/west coasts; the northeast (Oct–Jan) hits the east. South coast best Dec–Mar; switch to the east coast for surf May–Sep.
Several strong IGCSE/British schools in Colombo — British School in Colombo, CIS, Elizabeth Moir — secondary fees ~£2,500–5,700/yr. No comparable day school on the south coast → online + tutors + an exam centre.
Import permit (apply 2+ weeks ahead), microchip, rabies jab, and negative tests (heartworm, leishmaniasis). Entry via Colombo only, with 30 days home quarantine for all dogs.
Low violent crime, welcoming to families; watch petty scams, road safety (think twice about Eli on a scooter), dengue and monsoon flooding. The economy is recovering but still fragile.
Strong in the hill country — Ella, Kandy and the Knuckles range offer tea-estate singletrack and world-class scenery. Not on the doorstep of either base (Ella is ~3–4h from the south coast), so it's a weekend/holiday activity; Colombo has road-cycling clubs.
Colombo Rowing Club (established 1864) rows on Beira Lake and is an active club — a genuine reason to favour a Colombo base. Confirm the junior/learn-to-row programme and minimum age. And the south-coast surf (Weligama, Ahangama) is superb and close.
